Why Old Time Patterns?

A Thoughtful Return to Historical Sewing

Old Time Patterns was created for sewists who want more than a costume —
they want to understand how historical garments were actually made, worn, and lived in.

So much historical sewing today is simplified, modernized, or adapted beyond recognition. While that has its place, it often leaves serious sewists with more questions than answers.

Old Time Patterns exists to bridge that gap.

Our Approach

Every pattern and guide is developed with the same core principles:

  • Primary sources first
Original garments, period tailoring manuals, and historical documentation form the foundation of our work.
  • Construction as history
Seams, proportions, and techniques are treated as historical evidence — not inconveniences to be removed.
  • Wearable, teachable results
Patterns are drafted to be sewn, worn, studied, and understood — not just displayed.
  • Respect for the handwork
Hand sewing, period methods, and material awareness are honored and explained, with clarity and care.

Who This Is For

Old Time Patterns is designed for:

  • Historical costumers and reenactors
  • Living history interpreters and educators
  • Museum volunteers and docents
  • Serious hobbyists seeking depth and accuracy
  • Sewists who enjoy research as much as stitching

If you’ve ever wondered why a garment was shaped a certain way — not just how to sew it — you’re in the right place.

About the Maker

Old Time Patterns is created by a historical sewist and researcher with nearly two decades of experience studying period garments and construction techniques.

This work grew out of a long search for clear, reliable resources — the kind that explain what the original makers did, not just how modern patterns reinterpret it. Over time, that research became a personal reference library, teaching material, and eventually, a collection of patterns and guides meant to be shared.

Every pattern is shaped by hands-on experimentation, study of extant garments, and a deep respect for the people who made these clothes long before us.

Preserving History, One Stitch at a Time

Historical sewing is slow work.
It asks for patience, curiosity, and care.

Old Time Patterns exists to support that kind of making —
where every stitch is part of a longer story, and every garment keeps history alive.
